The Tingate Family’s Caravan Holiday Collection

The Tingate Family’s Caravan Holiday series is a fun and playful range of jewellery. It is designed with a 1950’s theme, and to keep with this theme I have used Formica and laminates which were widely used in the furniture at the time. The 50’s is a time-period that is steeped in nostalgia. It was a time when design was at the forefront, and new materials and shapes were being used, as well as bright colours. I find it interesting that these advances in innovation contrasted so strongly with the strict social expectations and rigid gender roles of the time.

This collection includes: earrings, pendants, brooches, stick pins and cufflinks. I use sterling silver, laminates and powder coating. The laminates come in an array of colours, patterns and textures and are bonded to the sterling silver. In this series there are an assortment of silhouette shapes that include: caravans, men, women, girls, boys, cars, trees, kangaroos and dogs. I also have pressed caravan brooches and pendants which have a 3D shape.

Cherry Blossoms Collection

The Cherry Blossom series is inspired by both nature and Japanese art. In Japan the cherry blossom is revered for its beauty. The progress of the blossoms blooming is followed and celebrated. I love the simple delicate shapes and the colours of the blossoms. This range of jewellery is made up of contrasts. For example the oxidised mat finish of the metal contrasts with the shiny, bright colours of the blossoms. Also the flat silhouette shapes of the twigs contrast with the curves of the blossoms. The pieces in this series are sculptural and colourful.

This collection includes: earrings, pendants, necklaces, rings and stick pins. Each piece is made from sterling silver that has a matt oxidised finish. This contrasts nicely with the glossy enamel painted colours of the blossoms. The blossoms come in white, yellow, tangerine, pink and red.

Twig & Leaf Collection

The Twig & Leaf Collection consists of earrings, pendants, necklaces and brooches. Each piece of jewellery in this series is made from sterling silver. Some of the pieces have had laminate bonded to them. The laminate comes in an array of colours, patterns and textures. The un-laminated pieces have been saw-pierced to create a leaf vein pattern. When I was designing this series I traced the shapes of real leaves and twigs that I found. This gives the pieces an organic design even though they are made out of sterling silver.
